Inas Al-Soqi
The Gypsy Storyteller
Exhibition on view: May 8 – 30, 2015
Gitana Rosa Gallery is pleased to present The Gypsy Storyteller, a solo show of new work by collage artist and printmaker, Inas Al-Soqi, opening May 8, 2015 and on view through May 30, 2015. Half Romanian and half Palestinian, Al-Soqi draws upon the cultural diversity she embodies and encounters in her travels. Utilizing commonplace printed ephemera from newspapers published in the late 1800s or contemporary fashion and entertainment magazines, Al-Soqi’s hand-cut collages play with the dichotomy between folk and fine art. The work implements imagery of Eastern cultures and colonized, war-torn areas fashioning narratives of past and contemporary political conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe and exploring themes of class, nobility, cultural sensibility, emigration and identity.
Inas Al-Soqi earned a degree in fine arts from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University in Boston. She was recently Artist in Residence at the Vincent van Gogh House in Zundert, Netherlands exhibiting at the museum in January of 2015. She has shown her work in galleries across the United States and Europe and boasts work in various museums and private collections in the U.S., Romania, Italy, Germany, Holland and France. Al-Soqi began a residency in Marrakech, Morocco in May of 2015.
