REVENGE OF THE BULLS
New paintings by Andrés García-Peña
May 13th - May 28th

Opening Reception
May 13th, 6-9pm
in conjunction with the WGA's 2:ND Friday Art Crawl

These paintings represent the latest iteration of the "Revenge of the Bulls" series by the artist Andrés García-Peña. The series initially began in 1993 in Barcelona, Spain. It was sparked by childhood memories of a bird’s-eye-view from an Aunt’s balcony overlooking the Plaza Santa Maria in Bogotá, Colombia. This latest interpretation continues to see the matador avenged among a rabble of carousing bulls. The artist has incorporated vibrant colors and his brushwork has achieved a painterly gestural manner.

"Andrés García-Peña started his career in New York City as a muralist and prominent figure in the East Village art scene of the Eighties. Since then he has lived and worked in Barcelona, and currently keeps his studio in Brooklyn. World renown as the "Central Park Gondolier," García-Peña has exhibited internationally, with solo shows in Mexico, Colombia, Holland, Spain, Sweden and throughout the United States.

García-Peña's paintings, rich narratives woven in broad cultural tapestries, are overflowing with a love of life- from a passion for its absurd pathos to a deeper appetite for its more carnal delights. A poetics of time and place, García-Peña's art is strung between the street vernacular of the urban world and the more subtle mysteries of the land. García-Peña slips between the chaotic extremes of our cultural schizophrenia, creating seamlessly fluid epics in which impossible juxtapositions and fantastical whimsies float in a suspension of belief. Here the transgressive is a metaphor for the sublime and the quotidian a means to mesmeric hallucination." - Carlo McCormick

Gitana Rosa Gallery
BLUEPRINTS
an exhibition

Gitana Rosa Gallery is proud to present an unusual and lively exhibition of ideas, plans and process from a wide range of artists and designers. The majority of creative work follows a line from conception through to realizations, the final product being an amalgamation of all the events leading up to its birth. ‘Blueprints’ is a celebration of this line, with its diverse and often indescribable formulas that are experimented with and worked through to reach that moment of completion and satisfaction. With ‘Blueprints’ we hope to remind our audience of the intensely playful nature of creativity.

“I FEEL YUCKY, The Candy Colored Nightmare”

Artist Statement:

The body of work entitled "I FEEL YUCKY, The Candy-Colored Nightmare” is the beginning of a larger series that explores not only the juxtposition of bright, cartoonish imagery with themes of depravity and putrification, but also joyously celebrates the mindbending genre of psychedelic art. The series was conceived as a basic study of hedonistic
creation, ignoring all but one pre-set parameter, a focus on concepts that thrilled me and only me.

As a professional illustrator/graphic designer, the majority of my artistic endeavors are generated purely from the direction of others, attempting to capture THEIR vision, according to THEIR specific tastes, with little to no personal fingerprint. This project equally embodies the opposite of this, allowing me to bring to life all of the things that live inside of me, with the carefree attitude similar to that of a child inventing their own imaginary friend. There are no boundaries here.

This project is also an act of bloodletting, allowing the content to pour out and relieve the constantly building pressure of the beehive buzzing inside my skull. I am an advocate of being completely immersed and moreover hoplessly lost within one’s own imagination, and for me, it is my only defense mechanism against the constant daily demands and horrors of “reality”. As I shut down, zone out, drift off, float away, these are the places I go.
I really like it there. And when I am forced to come back from the other side,....I FEEL YUCKY.

To kick off the fall season, Williamsburg’s Gitana Rosa Gallery, refracts the male gaze.

Hung, a multimedia exhibition, hones in on the male nude. A heroic figure in Greek, Roman and Renaissance art, the male nude proves more fascinating than ever. Whether relegated to obscurity or exalted past recognition, men’s bodies continue to challenge both men’s and women’s perceptions.

Love them or hate them, Hung’s male nudes tease the line between the sensuous and the glaringly obvious to present a nuanced portrait of the contemporary male.

The exhibition runs from Friday, September 17th – October 16th, 2010. Opening night will be sponsored by Hangar One Vodka, Kraken Rum and Brooklyn Brewery. Please also join us for the Hung Closing Party, in conjunction with the Williamsburg Gallery Association Second Friday’s Art Crawl, on October 8, 2010 for late night hours and musical performance.

Gallery hours: Thursday and Friday 1-7pm and Saturdays, 12-6pm and by appointment.

Primarily focusing on four contemporary Bushwick painters – Fedele Spadafora, Adam Miller, Alexandra Pacula and Bruno Perillo.

Individualistic in subject matter and technique, Spadafora, Miller, Pacula and Perillo reinforce the vibrancy and relevance of oil painting. With a provocative mix of abstract and representational elements and references ranging from Impressionism and Expressionism to Classicism and Pop Art, the works by these four artists are
rooted in art history, yet connect powerfully to contemporary viewpoints.

The artists work out of studios in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, and have shown together in seven previous exhibitions. Recent shows include Oil Slick, June 2010, presented by Gitana Rosa, and Corpus Hermeticum,
May 2010, presented by the Nerdrum Institute (which also featured the paintings of the Norwegian master Odd
Nerdrum) and Carnivale, November 2009 presented by Gitana Rosa Gallery.

Fedele Spadafora is an American painter whose figurative work deals with contemporary urban themes. His work shows a wide range of influences, including sources as diverse as the Renaissance, popular culture, and
his deep Italian roots. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1990, Spadafora spent six years in Prague, where, among other things, he co-founded the alternative publishing venture, Twisted Spoon Press. He is currently working on the “Hula Hoop” series, of which three paintings are being shown at ArtHamptons.

Adam Miller began an apprenticeship with the artist Allen Jones at the age of thirteen. At sixteen, he was accepted to the prestigious Florence Academy of Art in Italy where he underwent extensive training in classical
painting techniques and studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance. During those four years, Miller traveled throughout Europe studying the masters. His work has been commissioned by Robert Pamplin Jr., Chairman of the Board of the Portland Art Museum, Mike Tyson and Eric Rhodes, publisher of Fine Art Connoiseur.

Alexandra Pacula’s vigorous painterly scenes of urban nightlife offer an insight to human interactions, seductions and desires. Pacula moved from Poland to the U.S. at the age of fourteen. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2002 and finished a
Master of Fine Arts degree at Montclair State University of New Jersey. Her work has been included in many exhibitions around the U.S. as well as Spain and London. Pacula was recently awarded a Fellowship in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts for 2010. Other awards include the Robert Sterling Clark
Visual Art Space Award in 2010 and Winner of Saatchi Showdown Competition in 2008.

Bruno Perillo graduated from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2002. As a conceptual realist Bruno uses the painted portrait as a mode to express ideas that the
person/model/artist identifies with the sacred and profane allegorical motifs of the past through the use of contemporary posturing. Bruno’s
varying techniques and styles are inspired by the Tenebrist lighting of the Italian Baroque and the Realist/Naturalist movement that emerged out of the mid 19th Century French Academy. Many of Bruno’s paintings belong to prestigious private collections in America and Europe. Some of his other collectors include, various Government Officials, Foreign Diplomats, Federal Judges, State Assembly Members and others. Bruno is
represented by several galleries and he currently lives and works in Brooklyn NY.
